In August 2013 Adventure Peaks, in collaboration with outdoor manufacturer Marmot, opened the Marmot Store in Ambleside. It became the first technical standalone brand store for the town and Marmot’s first partnership store in the UK.
Adventure Peaks had forged a significant relationship with Marmot in 2013 and was granted permission from the US Outdoor clothing giant to launch a flagship store in Ambleside, Cumbria.
Launching a new website in 2016, the company soon realised that the design and user experience was not doing the business any commercial favours. BFI was asked to design and develop a new ecommerce solution which would serve to be the Marmot UK store.
We rebuilt and continue to maintain a customer-facing website to bring rich features and an engaging, enjoyable shopping experience to Marmot’s expanding UK client base.
We closely followed Marmot’s brand guidelines to created a full-service ecommerce environment, which allows users create a product wishlist, leave reviews and to search and buy directly from the Marmot European warehouse via multi-site stock management.
Once an initial set of visuals for each step of the user journey was produced, we built and tested to a pixel perfect margin. We worked closely with the Adventure Peaks team to integrate the site with their ongoing commercial requirements for an extended period both prior to and following launch.
Unfortunately, the client’s original online store was ill conceived, and met with some resistance from Marmot partners. We were tasked with brand-matching the Marmot US website – and, following a strict set of brand guidelines, we set out to do so. We sought to improve the overall site architecture and content hierarchy to facilitate intuitive browsing and a more frictionless experience, while simultaneously creating a more user-friendly and visual product story via improved navigation and filtering.
During the design process we built a number of bespoke functions, allowing customers to filter products by colour swatch, activity type, size and price, as well as constructing a product wish-list prior to purchase. This project demanded that we completely redesign the “out of the box” WooCommerce platform in order to maintain the branded elements. Once signed off, the visuals were used to implement a fully responsive online storefront underpinned using WordPress CMS.
Adventure Peaks was launching Marmot Shop with a revised and highly controlled branding approach, so it was important for the website redesign to fit into that look and feel. The neutral palette emphasised clean living, outdoor adventure and balance with the bright, fresh colours of the products available. The clean, modern typography evoked Marmot’s approachable, professional brand personality.
